Montgenèvre - A Place To Visit No Matter The Season

It isn’t a matter of luck that the sun (almost) always shines down on Montgenèvre. Its ideal geographical location and unique orientation, Hautes-Alpes, means that this special place holds the magical meteorological recipe for many sunny days, even during winter - a minimum of 300 days of the year, in fact, which is a très bon Alps average. When it's not sunny it's normally snowing!

Whether you are a snow sports lover and prefer the ski season months that span winter into springtime or prefer the warm summer months, the weather throughout the year is not to be frowned upon. Indeed, the climate is rather temperate and very agreeable, no matter the time of year. Especially since - whatever the season and according to your choice of pursuits in the mountains - the sun not only makes an outstanding appearance for the most part, but its countenance also leaves an impression on all who visit this most bright and beautiful commune.

At an elevated height of 1,860m - amidst the French Cottian Alps, at the foot of the mighty Mont Chaberton, and at the peak of Col de Montgenèvre mountain pass - Montgenèvre has a birds-eye view of the weather and does not disappoint.

Autumn & Winter

The Autumn months, September through November are a truly beautiful time to visit the French Alps since the ‘Golden Valley’ where Montgenèvre lies, is decorated with unforgettable changing colours of the larch forests.

Winter follows, naturally, with a much more crisper feel to the air, in December, bringing the cold but often sun-shiny days. The coldest time of the year is January, and the snowiest days are late January and February - this is when the fresh powder is the deepest.

Snow falls early and stays later which means that Montgenèvre’s ski season starts around the end of November and only ends well into April. During this time it can snow two to four days a week. Montgenèvre is one of the top snowsure resorts in the region. Snow enthusiasts live for ‘bluebird powder days’ – beautiful sunny days with light winds, following very recent snowfall – these are perfect days for skiing, snowboarding or snowshoe hiking, or randonnée en raquettes, when in France.

In Montgenèvre, snow is guaranteed and snow conditions are some of the best in the Alps, with a longer snow period and higher snowfall than any of the other resort in the vicinity. Its consistently good snow record ensures snow cover and snow depth that speaks for itself, bringing fresh powder days aplenty during ski season, along with the sunshine.

Spring & Summer

March and April bring warmer ski days, ideal Spring ski days in fact. Fresh snow, bright blue skies, and the pure mountain air will leave you breathless, not just because of the conditions, but there is also no place like the mountains of Montgenèvre to make you feel truly alive.

The month of May tends to summons the rain, but then Summertime begins to beckon mid-year and June brings with it the promise of glorious mountainous weather which lingers into September. Temperatures can reach 25°C, peaking around 28°C in July.

Montgenèvre has a way of luring its guests back time after time… enabling a return trip perhaps in another season. Whatever time of year you choose to visit, Go Montgenèvre will gladly assist you to make your time in Monty unforgettable.
