Why I love a White Christmas in Montgenevre

If you’ve skied with us before in Monty you’ll already know that Montgenevre is the most snow sure resort just over an hour away from Turin. The area was once one of the best-kept secrets in the alps, but thanks to recent high profile visitors like Candide Thovex, Powder Magazine, the Quiksilver team, and Ski Sunday’s own Ed Leigh, the area is enjoying a bit of a boom.

This reputation for one of the most consistent snowfall in the Alps is especially true early season in November and December. By the time you get to Christmas, the conditions are truly magnificent. I thought I would reflect on why I love Christmas in Monty so much. As a Mother to three young children myself, it may be the magical look on our children’s faces when they unexpectedly come face to face with Father Christmas on a sleigh. Or it could be the spectacular torchlight descents - as put on by the ESF (ski school) each year. Followed closely by the magnificent display of fireworks, while the fragrant smell of free vin chaud and hot chocolate fills the air.

Maybe it’s the live bands (usually dressed up in some kind of ridiculous Winter-themed costume!) that you cannot help but smile at. Or it may simply be the beautiful, twinkling lights that grace the main streets and the alpine Christmas decorations that enhance the vision of what we expect ‘Christmas’ to look like..

There’s still something childishly exciting about waking up on Christmas Day (even as an adult!) to a real white Christmas. The feeling of sitting around a log-fire to keep warm while the children open their presents. And Christmas day – out on the slopes! It certainly makes for an incredibly fun kind of day! Plus, for Christmas dinner, there are food deliveries from the local supermarket, or a range of great restaurants - with the best bit of all.. No washing up..!
