Summer Road Trip to Montgenevre
Want to make Montgenevre part of your Summer road trip?
Although we love Montgenevre, there is so much to explore in the surrounding area. If you have a car with you why not base yourself in the village, and enjoy everything it has to offer and more.
Just down the mountain on the French side is the picturesque city of Briancon, the highest city in France and second in Europe. You can wander through the streets of the Old Town, absorbing the brightly colourful tall buildings and the lovely view at the bottom across Briancon. Pop into one of the local creperies and enjoy a delicious mountain snack or wander in and out of the shops offering local specialities and arts and crafts.
There’s more sports, as Briancon has it all for Summer in the mountains. Go white water rafting and enjoy the ride down the river, battling your way through the exhilarating rush of the water. Or for those wanting a more relaxed time on the water, there are multiple lakes surrounding the area to paddle around in a kayak or canoe, soak up the sunshine and admire the beautiful scenery.
There are 2 local riding stables just down the mountain from Montgenevre offering excursions and tuition. Taking you into the Vallee de la Claree or into the mountains trekking through the trees and rivers. Horse riding is a very pleasurable way to explore the area in Summer time, with all ages and families welcome you can enjoy a full day out on horseback.
Of course, the surrounding areas into Italy and France offer more opportunities for hiking and biking. The Col d’Izoard is a fantastic location to wind around the Col’s corners and take in the breath-taking views. There is a magical small town called Cervieres on the Col d’Izoard with a beautiful river running through where you can stop for walks, lunch or just a drink break to catch your breath in the sunshine.
This year on 21stJuly the Tour de France is passing through Briancon, a spectacular event to be a part of with a great atmosphere amongst locals and tourists, the excitement of the ride coming through the city runs through everyone. You can drive, or take the bus down to the city to avoid the busy roads for the event, and grab a seat to watch the cyclists as they come through.
Even simply driving your car through France and into Montgenevre is a beautiful experience. Once you enter the mountains, it simply takes your breath away with the exquisite scenery that the French and Italian Alps has to offer, and in the Summer it is a completely different world of beauty.
So, why not? Grab your bike, walking boots and backpack and take the adventure. Settle down after a long day out in nature with a book watching the sunset over the mountains, or whip up a BBQ on the balcony.
